Positive decision of the ICF Board of Directors on Friday in Beijing
Duisburg is looking forward to the 2023 Canoe World Championships
DUISBURG (15.3.2019). Duisburg hosts the 2023 Canoe World Championships. The Kanu-Regatta-Verein (KRV) was awarded the contract by the Board of Directors of the World Federation ICF on Friday in Beijing. Duisburg has prevailed with its regatta course against Montemor in Portugal, the Bulgarian Plovdiv, Moscow and Poznan. Ten years after the 2013 World Championship, the city is once again furnishing "its living room" for the title fights of the world's best paddlers. There is no exact date yet. What is certain is that the Wedau gold medal will be awarded in the summer of 2023.
Duisburg had already hosted the Canoe World Championships in 1979, 1987, 1995, 2007 and 2013. In 2021 the regatta course in the Sportpark Duisburg will become the venue of the European Championships in canoe racing.
The Duisburg delegation was led by Jürgen Joachim, President of the KRV. After the successful application Jürgen Joachim said: "We are very pleased that we could convince the experts of the ICF of Duisburg and our course. The fact that we will receive the World Championships in the pre-Olympic year will enhance the regatta once again. We will see the paddlers in 2023, who will compete for gold in Paris a year later."
The Duisburg delegation, which was supported in its application by the German Canoeing Association, also included sports director Dr. Ralf Krumpholz and Jürgen Dietz, head of the DuisburgSport in-house operations. Jürgen Joachim emphasized the importance of the city in the work of persuasion. "From the very beginning of DuisburgSport and from the town hall, we received a tailwind for our idea. We have been united in our efforts to promote this globally important location in canoe racing. That was without question more than helpful.
Jürgen Joachim also thanked the state of Northrhine-Westfalia for its support during the application phase. "Anyone who wants to hold their own against such strong competition must present themselves accordingly. This included, among other things, a video produced especially for the application. The Kanu-Regatta-Verein alone cannot cope with such a project. We are therefore grateful for the help of the city and the state as well as companies such as Duisburger Baugesellschaft Gebag, Sparkasse Duisburg and Stadtwerke Duisburg. This contribution also convinced us that the entire region is behind the application.
The official applicant is the German Canoeing Association headed by Thomas Konietzko. Konietzko is also Vice President of the International Canoe Federation ICF. The German Canoeing Association entrusts the Kanu-Regatta-Verein with the organisation and implementation of the World Championships Regatta.
