65 nations start from 31 May to 2 June at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup in Duisburg
The current and future Olympic champions at the Wimbledon of Canoe Racing.
DUISBURG (23.5.2019). The world of canoeing as a guest in Duisburg: From 31 May to 2 June, the world's best canoeists collect points and medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup on the renowned Wedau course in Duisburg's Sportpark. On Saturday and Sunday a total of 27 final races are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. onwards. The World Cup includes all Olympic tracks. Admission is free on all three competition days.
A total of 65 nations have registered for the races in the pre-Olympic year, from A for Azerbaijan to U for Uzbekistan. The regatta will be a meeting of the current Olympic champions and athletes hoping for the gold medal of Tokyo 2020. A total of 670 canoeists have registered for the over 200 races.
The German Canoeing Federation, the most successful German sports federation at the Olympic Summer Games, will start with its complete national team at the second World Cup of the season. For the athletes, the stopover in Duisburg means a decisive form check before the 2019 World Championships at the end of August in Szeged, Hungary.
At the title fights in Hungary the nations can book their ticket for the Olympic races. The World Cup in Duisburg, the "Wimbledon of canoe racing", as the president of the world federation José Perurena called the regatta course, sets the standards: Where should it be improved? Which competitors should be kept in mind? Duisburg will be answering these questions from 31 May to 2 June.
The media interest in the races is correspondingly high. Among other things, ZDF will report on the World Cup in Duisburg on Sunday. Eurosport will broadcast two hours from Duisburg on both final days.
The regatta is also an important emergency test for the organizing Kanu-Regatta-Verein Duisburg with the president Jürgen Joachim at the top. In the coming year, the Para Canoe World Championships will take place in the Sportpark Duisburg. 2021 the organizing team around the KRV president Jürgen Joachim organizes the European Championships. In 2023 Duisburg will host the canoe racing championships for the sixth time.
