Regatta course in the Sportpark secures further high-ranking title fights for the future

World Federation ICF awards the World Championships of Para-Canoeing and the World Cup to Duisburg

DUISBURG (29.03.2018). The regatta location Duisburg is again in demand worldwide. In the year 2021 the best canoeists of the continent will compete in the European Championship on the Wedau-Course. Already in 2020 the "Wimbledon of canoeing", as the president of the world federation, José Perurena, called Duisburg, will be the venue of the world championships in para canoeing. Furthermore, the Kanu-Regatta-Verein Duisburg (KRV) will not only host the Sprint World Cup this year from May 25th to 27th. "We already have commitments for the World Cups next year and in 2020," says Jürgen Joachim, President of the KRV.

Duisburg has a good name in the world of canoeing, says Jürgen Joachim. This can be seen from the fact that "we were very successful with all our applications for high-ranking regattas this year". The Continental Association has been awarded the contract for the EM 2021. With the award of the Para World Championships and the World Cup for 2020, the ICF World Federation has now also clearly expressed its support for Duisburg as a location," said Jürgen Joachim.

The commitments also confirm that the investment of 8.9 million euros for the reconstruction of the Federal Training Centre on the athletes' side of the track is worthwhile, explains Thomas Konietzko, President of the German Canoeing Association and Vice President of ICF. "We are in a competitive situation, because other regatta fields also want to shine with first-class events. A good reputation and a perfect organisation are no longer the only decisive arguments".

The federal government, the city and the state of Duisburg have all worked together to strengthen Duisburg as a location for regattas. The aim was to be able to offer the elite of Olympic sport top conditions in the future as well. "These efforts have been acknowledged. The commitments for the next three years make this clear," said DKV President Thomas Konietzko.
